Watching sad movies. In a world in which war and injustice seem to be on all sides, you may wonder why human beings insist upon watching films that end in tragedy. Scientists believe that these films help us appreciate our friends and loved ones better. Empathy for others imagined or real causes the human brain to stimulate the secretion of oxytocin, a hormone that creates a rush of compassionate feelings. Those feelings, in turn, help us bond with our loved ones, which causes our brain to release serotonin, the feel-good hormone, into our bloodstream.
